Concept #6- The Source

Where do you go for your information about the world? Are there particular news shows, newspapers, websites or social media outlets that form the basis of your knowledge of world events?

1. Choose a source of information that you use regularly.  If this is a source that you use and trust, you must be having a preferred reading to either its content or the company itself. What about this source is appealing to you?

2. Research your source. Try to answer as many of the following questions as possible (this may take some time and effort);

a. Who owns your source? Is it owned by a larger company? Is it privately owned or traded on the stock market? Who owns the most stock? Try to find the overall parent company.

b. Who is the head of your source? This could be a CEO or head editor. Ultimately, who is the boss? Provide some detail about this person.

c. What are the commercial implications of your source? How do they make money?

d. Looking at the content of your source, how does the need to make money impact the content of your source? Explain with detail?

Concept #5- "Tough Guise"

Having just watched "Tough Guise" it is time to explore the media that you enjoy and see if the image of masculinity, as discussed in the movie, is present.

1. Choose a piece of media you enjoy and find an example of how masculinity is portrayed. Attach an image or video clip to your post.

2. Write a short character sketch of the character. Focus more on their personality and behaviour than biographical events.

3. Is you media consistent with what is described in "Tough Guise?" Why or why not?

Concept #4

Media is a business and a business must make money to be successful. The media we engage with is constructed in order to make money. Decisions about content, target demographics, media type, source and placement of media are all impacted by these commercial implications.

Consider a visual media that you enjoy; this could be your favourite film, t.v. show, video game etc.

1. Find an example of product placement in this medium and include a photo or clip on your blog.

2. Why would this particular product advertise in this medium? What is the connection between the target audience for the show and the product?

3. Do you think product placement is an effective form of advertising?

Concept #1- All media is a construction

Having just looked at how much effort goes into constructing food that looks appetizing, find other examples of construction/retouching in our society. You may wish to consider celebrity photos, car ads, video game trailers vs. game play etc.

Post at least 2 comparisons of actual photos as compared to a constructed image.

For each of your comparisons, write a short paragraph discussing what the differences are in the photos and your emotional reaction to seeing the differences; are you mad, sad, indifferent, surprised, etc. Explain your reaction.
